For those folks who are searching for information on the Rockport Band’s rehearsal times, we rehearse (almost) every Thursday evening at the Legion Hall in Rockport, Massachusetts (not the Rockports in Maine or Texas) beginning at 7:30. We provide music , music stands (unless you have a favorite you must use), and refreshments at break. You’ll need to bring your own instrument and supplies for it.

On Sunday, July 20, the Rockport Legion Band will present the second concert in the Diamond Anniversary series. Music will include “Amparito Roca”, “Three Dances from Henry VIII”, “The Original Dixieland Concerto”, “The Teddy Bear’s Picnic”, “Highlights from The Music Man”, and a salute to the Armed Forces. There will also be some favorite marches and popular songs. This week’s concert, conducted by Jason Howard, will begin at the earlier time of 7:00 P.M..

This is the centennial year of the birth of Leroy Anderson, composer. His reputation seems to rest solely upon his works written for the Boston Pops Orchestra, but he also had other works from his pen, including a Concerto for Piano and Orchestra. The Rockport Legion Band is pleased to wish the Anderson Family best wishes on the celebration of their father’s centennial celebration. Just to show that his music is alive and well in Massachusetts (which is, after all, the home of the Boston Pops), we have performed the following of his works in the past year: Sleigh Ride, A Christmas Festival, Blue Tango, Promenade, The Syncopated Clock, Belle of the Ball, Horse and Buggy, The Phantom Regiment, and A Trumpeter’s Lullaby. This year we are opening our Seventy-Fifth year of summer concerts by including a delightful arrangement by Mr. Anderson of Meredith Willson’s “76 Trombones”.

If you’re located in the Northeast section of Massachusetts, come out to the tip of Cape Ann this evening, and hear a free evening of music, beginning at 7:00 P.M. located on Rockport’s scenic Back Beach. Parking is free.

Congratulations to all who participated last night! The Bonfire Band seemed to be a giant vacuum, picking up every musician who traveled by — we had people walking onto the bandstand wanting to play, which was (apologies to Tony the Tiger) “grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat”! . We actually had a full band (28 players, including the seven “walk-ons”). Some of you long-time R.L.B. members will remember playing programs with fewer musicians. The breakdown by instrument: piccolo/flute - 3; clarinet - 4; alto sax - 2; tenor sax - 1; trumpet/cornet - 6; horn - 2; trombone - 6(!), baritone - 1; tuba - 1 (thanks to your guilt trip, Al); percussion - 2.

Musically speaking, the performance wasn’t too bad, either.

Next year, we should again remember to make sure we ask every one we know who is local to come sit in on the Fourth, just as (I suspect) some of you did this year. We’ll also have to make sure about the schedule of events for next year –I wasn’t too comfortable with the long “interruption” while we were playing.

For those of you who are playing in the Seventy-Fifth consecutive summer series, I’ll see you for the first rehearsal of the series on Thursday, July 10 at 7:30 sharp.
