Rockport Legion Band Summer Schedule

We will begin our summer schedule with our appearances on July 4.  The Clown Band will perform in the Firemen’s (sic) Parade (details will be posted later) and the Bonfire Band (details also posted later) will perform on the Back Beach Bandstand in the evening. All musicians are welcome for either group; detailed contact information for both bands will be posted soon.

Our summer series of Sunday night bandstand concerts will begin on  July 8 at 7:00 P.M. with Steve Thomas conducting. The eight weeks of performances will continue every Sunday evening through August 26. Program information will be posted here for each concert.

Rockport Legion Band Featured on “Brasscast”

Peter Ryan and Lucas Burns, hosts of the international band podcast “Brasscast”, have selected the Rockport Legion Band to be featured on their program of September 6, 2009.

The program will feature five tracks from the RLB’s CD “We Are The Rockport Legion Band” plus an interview that will give listeners an brief overview of the band. The musical examples are:

Duble: Galop Zip Boom

Sousa: Belle of Chicago March

Allen: General Mixup, U.S.A.

Lampe/Park: Watermelon Club Rag

Lowrey: Prince of Decorah Galop

We are, of course, thrilled to be recognized and featured on such a widely-heard program. Peter tells me that they have over 40,000 listeners worldwide! Not bad for a little band from the edge of the world.

“Brasscast” has, unfortunately, ceased to exist (like many Internet enterprises), so the program is now available by clicking on the “RLB on Brasscast” link to our media player (Jukebox Alive!) in the right hand column.

Concert For August 28 Cancelled

Due to the impending weather and local emergency personnel requests to stay off the roads tomorrow, the Rockport Legion Band is cancelling its concert scheduled for August 28, 2011. There will be no make up date because of other commitments.

Our next scheduled appearance will be October 15 at 2:00 during the Rockport Chamber of Commerce “Harvest Festival”.

Concert #4, Sunday, July 31, 2011

Jason Howard leads the band this week. Music list has been moved to “Previous Concert Programs”.

As usual, we welcome families with children. There will be special pieces played that are geared towards children’s activities, but we do ask that there be no yelling and screaming.

Concert #3, July 24, 2011

The program for Concert #3 is posted below. Steve Thomas will conduct the music this evening. As always, we welcome children; we have musical activities planned for them, but we do ask that they do not yell and scream during the music. They are always welcome to run around, but quietly.

Concert listing moved to “Previous Concert Programs”.

Summer Concert #1, July 10, 2011

The band wishes to announce the opening concert of its seventy-eighth summer season. The program begins at 7:00 P.M. on the Back Beach bandstand. Remember to bring a blanket or a chair (or both!).

Steve Thomas will conduct this first presentation. Music will include selections from the opera, the stage, the street, the movies, and popular radio. There will also be a medley of period music in commemoration of the one hundred fiftieth anniversary of the beginning of the American Civil War in 1861.

The band finished recording a brand new CD this past Spring, and copies of the disc will be available at the concert. The cover features a painting by the Rockport’s own Henry Kaplan.

As always, the concert is free to the public.
